Kinds of Full Physical Containment

چکیده
Full physical containment is the relation in which one physical entity is completely inside another. It is central to the description of natural resources held in reservoirs above or below the surface. Previous ontological representations of containment are located in abstract space, incomplete, or insufficiently incorporate voids, so in this paper we develop a complete taxonomy for the full containment relation that is situated in physical space and integrates voids. The taxonomy is formalized in a mereotopological theory and specializes the DOLCE foundational ontology, thus advancing hydro ontology development.

A Calculus for Reasoning About Containment and Object Access
In this paper we analyze two different notions of containment that are relevant to reasoning about physical systems, a notion of being inside versus a notion of being restricted. We develop a formal vocabulary that allows us to represent and reason about restrictive containment and formalize three kinds of accessibility that are each salient to attempts to reason about the ability of pairs of o...
متن کاملQuery Containment for Databases with Uncertainty and Lineage
We define and investigate the computational complexity of the query containment problem for data that support both uncertainty and lineage. Query containment depends on the definition of database containment which, for traditional databases, is defined as a simple set containment for each relation. As this is not the case in the presence of uncertainty and lineage, we revisit the notion of data...
متن کاملRepresenting Natural Kinds by Spatial Inclusion and Containment
Biomedical terminologies lack a clear-cut understanding of the semantics of part-whole relations. In order to design a conceptually adequate ontology for the biomedical domain, we investigate different forms of ontological dependencies between parts and wholes. We then suggest, for natural kinds at least, a move away from modeling the relations between parts and wholes and advocate instead conc...
متن کاملRichard Metcalfe and Christopher A . Rochelle Chemical containment of waste in the geosphere
The aim of this introductory paper is to highlight those underlying chemical principles that are common to all forms of waste management by geological means, and that rely to some extent upon chemical containment. Until recently, chemical processes were usually considered mainly because they can affect the physical performance of engineered containment systems. However, in recent years, many re...
متن کاملA Solution of Polygon Containment, Spatial Planning, and Other Related Problems Using Minkowski Operations
This paper gives a complete solution to the polygon containment problem under translation and other related problems for all kinds of two dimensional regions. The solution is achieved in three steps. First, it is shown that the containment and the related problems can be directly mapped to Minkowski decomposition and addition problems. Minkowski decomposition, which is intrinsically a geometric...
